More on oral care products and Oral 7

There's some confusion in our head and neck cancer universe about the best regimen for oral care.

In many parts of the world, fluoride trays are used but not so much in New Zealand. Only one of our members has the trays, given to her by the Otago Dental School.

In most parts of NZ, we are advised to use Colgate Neutrafluor 5000 toothpaste, the toothpaste with the most fluoride. I believe "neutral" fluoride is a type that doesn't stain the teeth. We're not advised about…

Here are some instructions and information about using Oral 7 mouth care products. I have put these together after talking with the company rep, an oral medicine specialist and people on the Oral Cancer Foundation.

Biotene used to be the go-to product for dry mouth sufferers. I used it myself when other toothpastes made my mouth sting. This was about 15 years ago. I can’t be sure of the time frame. Then Biotene became unavailable in New Zealand.…

Oral 7 is an Australian company providing dry mouth products. Biotene, which was previously the main player in this area, no longer contains two enzymes which aid people who have very low saliva production. Oral 7 contains these enzymes and is expanding its reach to New Zealand. A representative of Oral 7 is providing free samples of their oral gel for attendees for at Thursday's Auckland meeting.
