The Head and Neck Cancer Support Network Trust has been actively advocating for equitable access to dental reconstruction services for cancer patients across New Zealand. In August 2024, the Trust addressed a critical issue regarding delays and access limitations at Dunedin Hospital, where patients face extended wait times due to outsourced dental services. Highlighting the inequity known as "postcode care," Diana Ayling, Chair of the Network, urged the Minister of Health to consider a nationwide policy through the Head and Neck Cancer Optimal Cancer Care Pathway. This policy would standardize free dental reconstruction for all head and neck cancer patients, aiming to enhance quality of life, facilitate social reintegration, and support financial independence post-treatment.
