A Breakthrough for the New Zealand Head and Neck Cancer Community: Access to Keytruda Begins
It’s a moment to celebrate for the head and neck cancer community across Aotearoa New Zealand! Pharmac has just announced widened access to life-saving cancer treatments, including pembrolizumab (Keytruda), starting from October 1, 2024. This marks a major victory for our community, offering renewed hope for people with advanced head and neck cancers.
For years, patients and advocates have called for better access to innovative treatments that can extend and improve the lives of those living with these challenging cancers. Pembrolizumab, a groundbreaking immunotherapy, has been a beacon of hope for cancer patients around the world, and now it will be fully funded here in New Zealand for eligible people.
More Time for Precious Moments with Loved Ones
The news that pembrolizumab will soon be available means more than just medical treatment; it means time. Time to share stories with friends, create new memories with whānau, and experience the moments that make life meaningful. Pharmac’s Director of Pharmaceuticals, Geraldine MacGibbon, summed it up perfectly: “Access to these medicines will slow down the progression of these cancers and improve survival so that people have more valuable time with their whānau and friends.”
For those in our community who have fought bravely against head and neck cancers, the potential to extend life while maintaining quality is nothing short of transformative. The uncertainty that many patients have faced, and the financial burden shouldered by those who’ve had to self-fund this treatment, will finally be alleviated.

🌟Shining a Light on Head and Neck Cancer Struggles: Navigating the Storm of Dental Rehabilitation Delays
Living without teeth is not easy. It’s a reality faced by many in our community, and we, as the Head and Neck Cancer Support Network Trust, are working tirelessly to bring about change for those affected. One individual’s story, shared with us, reflects the widespread struggle of patients experiencing delays in receiving dental rehabilitation—a delay that has left many feeling isolated, hopeless, and unheard.
This individual's journey began with multiple biopsies and surgeries to remove a tumour from the top gum. Thankfully, the biopsy revealed it wasn’t cancer, but the emotional and physical challenges continue. The monthly check-ups have become routine, yet the challenge of living without teeth until at least 2025 remains an overwhelming burden.
"I’m a really social person, active in my community, but now I’m just hiding at home. My worst nightmare was having no teeth. It’s hard to stay positive, and even harder to look for work to afford private dental care," shared the patient.
This delay in dental rehabilitation has left many, particularly women, feeling neglected and emotionally drained. The profound impact on mental health and social well-being is often overlooked by both the medical profession and government decision-makers. It's a harsh reality that demands immediate action.
Recognising the severity of this issue, the Head and Neck Cancer Support Network Trust took decisive steps to advocate on behalf of the affected individuals. We wrote to the Minister of Health, Dr. Shane Reti, outlining the unacceptable delays in dental rehabilitation. We aim to raise awareness and push for expedited solutions to address this concern.
Diana Ayling, Chair of the Head and Neck Cancer Support Network Trust, emphasised that our letter highlights the lack of available appointments until 2025 and the significant impact this delay has on people’s lives. "We cannot allow these delays to continue—people deserve to live with dignity and hope, not in silence and despair."
This story serves as a powerful reminder of the challenges faced by our community. It is a call to action for the medical profession and government to provide better support and understanding for those living with the consequences of head and neck cancer. Together, we must ensure that no one suffers in silence.
