Significant Advancements in Head and Neck Cancer Treatment Announced on World Head and Neck Cancer Day

Auckland, 27 July 2024 – In a landmark moment for cancer care in Aotearoa New Zealand, two significant advancements have been announced in conjunction with World Head and Neck Cancer Day. These developments promise to enhance treatment options and care quality for those battling head and neck cancer.

Pharmac’s Consultation on Funding Keytruda

Pharmac has initiated a consultation process with stakeholders regarding the funding of Keytruda for advanced head and neck cancer. Keytruda, a groundbreaking immunotherapy, has demonstrated considerable efficacy in treating various cancers. Its potential funding represents a substantial step forward in offering advanced treatment options to patients in New Zealand. This move follows the New Zealand Government's commitment to funding 13 cancer drugs, with Keytruda being one of the selected few.

"We are optimistic about the potential impact of Keytruda on head and neck cancer treatment," said Diana Ayling, Chair of the Head and Neck Cancer Support Network Trust. "We believe that Pharmac consulting with stakeholders is a critical step to ensure that this valuable treatment becomes accessible to those who need it most."

Completion of the Head and Neck Cancer Surgical Service Framework

In addition to Pharmac’s announcement, the completion of the Framework for the provision of Head and Neck Cancer Surgical Services in Aotearoa New Zealand marks a significant milestone. This comprehensive framework from Te Aho o Te Kahu (the Cancer Agency) is designed to enhance the delivery of surgical care for head and neck cancer patients, ensuring high-quality and equitable treatment.

"The development of this framework involved extensive collaboration and dedication," said Diana Ayling "We are proud to have participated in the establishment a model that will guide future frameworks for other surgical sites."

Ongoing Efforts and Commitment

Te Aho o Te Kahu continues to be committed to implementing the framework and achieving the planned benefits for patients and the healthcare sector. Their focus remains on improving the delivery, efficacy, and equity of quality cancer treatments within the reformed health system.

Te Tiriti o Waitangi Commitments

The framework underscores Te Aho o Te Kahu's dedication to its obligations under Te Tiriti o Waitangi. It addresses bias, balances leadership between providers and Māori communities, shares decision-making and resources, and ensures accountability for Māori health equity. This approach is vital in creating an inclusive and responsive healthcare system.

Resilience Planning

Resilience planning is integral to maintaining services during disruptions. This includes developing continuity plans, establishing regional and national networks, and ensuring clear communication lines for efficient treatment redirection.

International Approaches to Centralising Complex Surgical Services

Centralising complex surgical procedures aims to optimise safety and quality of care by concentrating these services in specialised units. Various countries have implemented this approach with different methods and success rates. Aotearoa New Zealand can learn from these international experiences to adapt best practices to its unique context.

Impact of Centralising Cancer Services

While centralising complex surgery can pose challenges such as limited hospital availability and increased travel and financial burdens for patients and whānau, it also improves outcomes by concentrating resources and expertise. Given New Zealand's geographical and population densities, the framework focuses on ensuring the capabilities for safe, high-quality surgery while maintaining equitable access and whānau-centred care.

Looking Ahead

On this World Head and Neck Cancer Day, we celebrate these significant milestones and reaffirm our commitment to improving cancer care in Aotearoa New Zealand. The path ahead is paved with the dedication and collaboration of healthcare providers, policymakers, and communities working together to ensure that every patient receives the best possible care.
